A legal Pokemon deck is exactly 60 cards. That's the whole answer for tournament play, and it hasn't changed since the game launched in 1996. The interesting part is what goes into those 60 slots, and what the rules mean for the cards in your binder.
The rules that shape every deck
- 60 cards, exactly. Decks are counted at events; over or under is an illegal list.
- Max 4 copies of a card by name. Two cards with the same name count together even from different sets, which is why reprints matter for players.
- Basic Energy is unlimited. The 4-copy rule skips basic Energy cards.
- At least one Basic Pokemon. You must be able to start the game with a Basic in play.
- 6 prize cards. Set aside at the start; take one per knockout, take all six and you win.
A typical split (and why there's no perfect one)
Most competitive lists land near 12-20 Pokemon, 30-40 Trainer cards and 8-12 Energy. Trainers dominate modern decks because draw and search cards decide consistency. But the split is strategy, not law: a single-attacker deck runs lean on Pokemon, and some decks bend every ratio above.
