Where the missing 1.9% hides

Failures cluster in predictable places, and knowing them tells you more than the headline number:

  • Reprinted artwork. The same illustration issued across multiple sets, where only the set symbol and collector number separate printings worth very different amounts.
  • Promo stamps and subtle variants. A small foil stamp can be the only difference between a bulk card and a valuable promo.
  • Holo versus reverse-holo under glare. The variant signal is a surface property, and reflections can mask it; a slight tilt of the card usually resolves it.

A scanner that names the card but misses the printing is a price checker that lies.
