What Makes Vintage Pokemon Cards Valuable?

1st Edition vs Unlimited

1st Edition cards (marked with a "1st Edition" stamp left of the artwork) come from the earliest print run and carry a large premium over Unlimited prints — often several multiples for the big holos.

Shadowless Base Set

Early Base Set printings lack the drop shadow to the right of the art box ("Shadowless"). They sit between 1st Edition and Unlimited in value — see our Base Set Charizard guide for how to identify each printing.

Condition is King

Vintage cards in true near-mint condition are scarce — most survivors were played by kids. Graded gem-mint vintage holos sell for large multiples of raw prices. Learn what to look for in our condition guide.
